Queers You Should Know: Kitt Spata’s Journey to Creating a Gender-Affirming Hair Haven

As a travel journalist for EveryQueer, I’m always seeking out the people behind the destinations we visit, the builders behind those spaces where our community can truly feel seen and celebrated. My journey recently brought me to Richmond, Virginia, a city brimming with a vibrant queer scene, and to the doorstep of Youphoria Studios, a gender-affirming hair haven owned by the incredible Kitt Spata.

Walking into Youphoria Studios felt like entering a safe haven, a world away from the often-judgmental gaze and gendered expectations of mainstream salons and barber shops. This intimate space, nestled within a suite of independent aesthetics businesses, exudes a calming energy.

The absence of a bustling reception area immediately sets the tone for a personalized and relaxed experience. Kitt, who uses they/them pronouns, has thoughtfully curated every detail to foster a sense of belonging and comfort.

Kitt’s journey to creating Youphoria Studios is inextricably linked to their own path of self-discovery.

As a nonbinary, trans masculine individual, they deeply understand the power of a haircut to validate and affirm one’s true identity. “I think the ability to hold space for nuance in queer and gender-affirming spaces is super important,” Kitt shared with me, emphasizing the need for spaces that embrace the complexities and fluidity of gender expression and allow for clients to express themselves and all their interwoven identities. This philosophy is at the heart of Youphoria Studios, where clients are welcomed and celebrated for exactly who they are.

Kitt’s passion for creating this safe haven stems from their own experiences navigating a world that often struggles to understand and accept trans identities.

Moving to Richmond three years ago was a deliberate choice, a search for a welcoming community. “I like the community here,” they reflected. I worked at a barber shop near a military base in Northern Virginia within the first couple of months on T. I learned a lot, but it just didn’t feel like me. I love Virginia and wanted to stay in the South, but I really fell in love with Richmond.”

It’s evident that the feeling is mutual. Youphoria Studios has blossomed into a vital hub for Richmond’s LGBTQ+ community, a place to forge connections, find support, and, of course, receive exceptional hair care.

What truly sets Kitt apart is their profound empathy and understanding of their clients’ needs. They shared that all of their clients have a personal connection to the trans and gender nonconforming communities, whether they identify as trans themselves, have a complex view of gender or have a trans loved one.

Kitt’s approach to hair care transcends the purely aesthetic. It’s a holistic practice that recognizes the profound impact a haircut can have on self-esteem, mental health and self-expression. They described their work as “one part therapy, one part aesthetics,” a statement that resonated deeply with me.

Kitt’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond the studio chair. They actively champion trans visibility and representation, openly sharing their own experiences with gender identity and mental health online.

While acknowledging the potential challenges of such vulnerability, Kitt recognizes the power of authentic connection. Their openness has fostered a strong sense of community among their clients and followers.

Beyond the exceptional haircuts and vibrant community, Youphoria Studios offers a unique sensory experience. Recognizing the needs of neurodivergent clients, Kitt has created a space that can be adapted to individual preferences. Soft lighting, the option for quiet appointments, and a mindful approach to communication all contribute to an environment where everyone can feel comfortable and at ease.

As I sat with Kitt, absorbing their story and the palpable sense of care that permeates Youphoria Studios, I was reminded of the vital importance of spaces like this. In a world that often seeks to confine us to rigid boxes, Youphoria Studios offers liberation and celebration.

It’s a place where identity is honored, self-expression is nurtured, and community thrives.

If your travels ever take you to Richmond, a visit to Youphoria Studios is a must. You’ll leave not only with a fresh new look, but also with a renewed sense of self and belonging.
