In the heart of Richmond, Virginia, a revolution in ink is underway. Heartfelt Tattoo isn’t just another tattoo shop; it’s a sanctuary where the LGBTQ+ community can express themselves freely, surrounded by understanding and acceptance. Founded by Wednesday (she/her) and Jensen (he/they), Heartfelt is a testament to the power of creating safe spaces in a world that often feels hostile.

“I wanted to work somewhere that wasn’t around a bunch of cis men who don’t respect me,” Wednesday shares, highlighting the importance of a safe workspace. Wednesday adds, “For me as an artist, it’s really hard for me to tattoo when it’s really loud and busy because I’m autistic.” Heartfelt Tattoo provides a space where artists can thrive without the added stress and pressure of a conventional tattoo shop environment.
The need for such spaces is undeniable. For many in the queer and trans community, everyday experiences can be fraught with microaggressions, discrimination, and even violence. Traditional tattoo shops, often dominated by hyper-masculine culture, can be particularly intimidating. The buzzing of needles, the loud music, and the pervasive sense of judgment can be overwhelming, especially for those who already feel marginalized.

“I wanted to work somewhere that wasn’t around a bunch of cis men who don’t respect me,” Wednesday confides, echoing a sentiment felt by many queer and trans artists. Heartfelt Tattoo offers a refuge from this toxic environment, a space where artists can focus on their craft without fear of harassment or prejudice.
This commitment to inclusivity extends beyond the artists to the clients. “Tattoos are gender-affirming,” Jensen asserts, recognizing the powerful role tattoos can play in self-discovery and expression. For many trans and non-binary individuals, tattoos can be a way to reclaim their bodies, to express their true selves on their own terms. Heartfelt provides a safe and supportive environment for this journey, prioritizing open communication and informed consent.
“We create a space that prioritizes queer, trans bodies and open consent,” Wednesday explains. This emphasis on consent is crucial in an industry where clients often feel vulnerable. Heartfelt ensures that every client feels heard, respected, and empowered throughout the entire tattooing process.
The shop’s ethos is deeply rooted in cooperation and mutual respect. While Wednesday is technically the owner, she prefers to think of Heartfelt as a collective. “It’s more cooperative, less hierarchical. It’s a shared space, and it’s not lost on us. It’s about the care we give each other,” she says. This sense of community is palpable in the shop’s warm and inviting atmosphere.
Heartfelt Tattoo is more than just a place to get inked; it’s a haven for self-expression, healing, and community building. By prioritizing inclusivity, consent, and care, Wednesday and Jensen have created a space where everyone feels welcome, valued, and empowered to embrace their true selves. In a world that desperately needs more empathy and understanding, Heartfelt Tattoo shines as a beacon of hope and acceptance.
