Not every city has the power to change the way you feel about travel, but Stockholm does. This summer, EveryQueer travelers joined together in the Swedish capital for Stockholm Pride, discovering a destination that doesn’t just invite you to explore what it has to offer, but openly welcomes you to belong. For queer travelers, that sense of belonging means everything.
With so much happening in the world right now, many of us are seeking destinations that reflect our values, places that not only feel safe but also celebrate who we are. Stockholm does exactly that. If you’d like a more personal look at our Pride week experience, you can read our story EveryQueer in Stockholm: A Queer Group Adventure to Scandinavia’s Biggest Pride, but here, let’s take a closer look at the city itself and why it remains one of Europe’s most inclusive capitals.
A City That Honors All Stories

In the cobblestone lanes of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, history comes alive. Unlike many destinations, Stockholm doesn’t gloss over the past, it embraces it. At the Royal Palace and at Drottningholm Palace (the Queen’s Palace and today’s official royal residence just outside the city), queer narratives woven into Sweden’s royal history are proudly shared on guided tours. It’s a powerful reminder that LGBTQ+ stories belong at the heart of cultural storytelling.
Old Town is also home to newer queer history. Nothing feels more “Stockholm” than a fika at Chokladkoppen. With its rainbow-flag façade and famously warm welcome, this iconic café has long been a safe haven for the community, and it was the very first business in Stockholm to fly the rainbow flag.
Culture With a Beat of Its Own
Stockholm’s cultural treasures are as dazzling as they are inclusive. At the Vasa Museum, a 17th-century warship tells a story of ambition, artistry, and mishap, while ABBA The Museum delivers the glitter, joy, and sing-along pop magic that has defined generations.

When night falls, the city doesn’t slow down. From neighborhood hangouts to the rhythm of queer nightlife, Stockholm thrives on diversity. Evenings at Mälarpaviljongen, a queer-owned floating oasis on Lake Mälaren, are quintessentially Stockholm: inclusive, joyful, and effortlessly beautiful.
For stunning views and chic vibes, Pelago offers the perfect mix of sunset cocktails and people-watching. Later, Stockholm’s nightlife pulses with energy, led by Moxy, the city’s biggest lesbian and queer club, which takes over venues across town. The team behind Moxy also runs Lyckan, a cozy queer bar and eatery that’s a must-visit.

Annual highlights like Stockholm Pride transform the city into a vibrant, colorful celebration of love, equality, and community. While the week of Pride is electric, the spirit of celebration here truly lasts year-round.
Neighborhoods With Personality
Like many world capitals, Stockholm is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character. We loved calling Södermalm home, a district often described as the city’s coolest and most creative.
Our base, Hellstens Glashus, lived up to its name with striking glass-and-steel architecture that floods the interiors with light. Inside, bold colors, eclectic furniture, and artistic touches made every corner feel unique. With its lively restaurant and bar drawing both locals and travelers, plus a location just steps from Mariatorget, it was the ideal hub for soaking up Södermalm’s energy and charm.
Nature Meets Nurture

Few capitals balance energy and serenity quite like Stockholm. Just a short ferry ride away, the Stockholm Archipelago stretches across 30,000 islands and more than 650 square miles — a natural wonderland perfect for reflection and light adventure. Paddleboard across glassy waters, savor cinnamon buns in coastal villages, or simply lose yourself in the horizon, all with the same spirit of freedom and acceptance that defines the city itself.
A City Built on Belonging
What makes Stockholm remarkable are the people and places that ensure every traveler feels welcome. Stockholm LGBT, the city’s network of partner hotels, restaurants, attractions, and community organizations, is dedicated to creating safe, affirming, and unforgettable experiences for LGBTQ+ visitors. By choosing these partners, travelers don’t just enjoy a fabulous vacation; they become part of a living, breathing community of belonging.

Ultimately, Stockholm proves that travel can be transformative, offering moments of joy, freedom, and self-expression. Whether you come for culture, nature, nightlife, or simply the chance to feel seen and celebrated, one truth remains: in Stockholm, you belong here.
Plan your trip with Stockholm LGBT. The “Stockholm. You Belong Here.” campaign is powered by Visit Stockholm.
And if you’re setting sail, Stockholm is also a fantastic destination for LGBTQ+ travelers who love cruising. Consider starting or ending your voyage here, and be sure to linger a few days longer to soak up everything this open, welcoming city has to offer.
