Hej hej from Stockholm! This summer, EveryQueer brought together a group of lesbian, queer, trans, and nonbinary travelers for a 5-day adventure in Sweden’s capital city, timed perfectly with the annual Stockholm Pride. What we discovered was more than just a festival; it was a celebration of belonging in one of the world’s most open and inclusive cities.

A City Built on Inclusion
Stockholm has long been a beacon for LGBTQ+ people. Homosexuality was decriminalized here in 1944, over 80 years ago, and the city has now celebrated 26 years of equal marriage rights. Walking its cobblestone streets, you feel this history woven into the fabric of daily life. Pride is not just an event that happens once a year; it is an extension of the city’s ongoing commitment to equality.
For our group, many of us arriving from countries where anti-LGBTQ+ legislation continues to rise, Stockholm offered a deep sense of relief. Here, love, identity, and joy were not just accepted. They were celebrated loudly, publicly, and unapologetically.

Our Neighborhood: Södermalm
We based ourselves at Hellsten’s Glashus, right in the heart of Södermalm. Often compared to Brooklyn, this neighborhood pulses with creative energy. It is home to queer nightlife, indie boutiques, coffee shops, and icons like Robyn and the fictional Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Our hotel was perfectly positioned for Pride week. During the summer, the streets surrounding Mariatorget come alive with outdoor events, rainbow flags, and a warm, communal spirit. Inside, Glashus offered a mix of old and new with exposed brick walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a bar built around Stockholm’s literal bedrock dating back nearly 2 billion years. It was the perfect launchpad for exploring the city.

Pride Week in Stockholm
Stockholm Pride is Scandinavia’s largest LGBTQ+ celebration, and being part of it as a group made it even more powerful. The festival blends cultural events, performances, workshops, and of course, the iconic parade winding its way through the city streets. With over 50,000 participants and hundreds of thousands of spectators, the atmosphere is electric.
Marching through the city alongside other queer and trans folks from around the world was emotional. We were not just visitors, we were part of something larger, something deeply affirming. The theme this year, “You Belong Here”, could not have been more fitting.

Beyond Pride: Exploring Stockholm
Between Pride events, we explored some of the city’s most iconic sights. We wandered the winding alleyways of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, where golden-hued buildings seem to glow in the northern light. We took in the futuristic architecture of the City Hall and enjoyed ferry rides across the sparkling archipelago.
Food was another highlight. From cozy cafés in Södermalm to traditional Swedish dishes with a modern twist, meals became a chance for connection, sharing stories, laughing, and reflecting on our journey together.

A Community Effort
This trip would not have been the same without our friends at Stockholm LGBT, the city’s “rainbow family.” As one of the only LGBTQIA+ destination marketing organizations of its kind in the world, they have built a network of queer-owned and queer-friendly hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Their commitment ensures that travelers like us can experience Stockholm in a way that feels safe, welcoming, and joyful. If you are planning your own trip, their website www.stockholmlgbt.com is an incredible resource, and their Instagram @stockholmlgbt is packed with inspiration.

Why It Matters
Travel is never just about the destination. It is about how a place makes you feel. For many in our group, being in Stockholm was more than just a vacation. It was a chance to breathe easier, to love openly, and to feel part of a global community that stretches far beyond our borders.
In a world where queer and trans rights are increasingly under attack, spaces like Stockholm Pride matter. They remind us that resistance can look like joy, that belonging is a radical act, and that we are never alone.

Until Next Time
As our 5 days in Stockholm came to a close, it was clear this trip was more than just a checklist of sights. It was an affirmation of identity, friendship, and freedom. From Södermalm’s buzzing streets to the rainbow-filled Pride parade, every moment whispered the same message: You belong here.
