Cape Town, South Africa, has officially won the bid to host WorldPride 2028, making history as the first African city to hold this global celebration of LGBTQ+ pride and rights. This momentous achievement highlights Cape Town as a beacon of inclusivity, diversity, and progress, and marks a significant milestone for the LGBTQ+ community across Africa and beyond.
What is WorldPride?
WorldPride is an international event licensed by InterPride, an organization representing Pride organizers worldwide. It is a celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, promoting equal rights and visibility through parades, parties, conferences, and other events. The EveryQueer team and I were fortunate to attend WorldPride in New York City in 2019, and we still talk about how incredible it was to witness the energy, diversity, and sense of unity it brought to the city. Hosting this event in Cape Town will not only spotlight Africa’s growing commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity but also foster a deeper understanding of the region’s diverse queer experiences.
The Vision Behind the Bid
Cape Town’s successful bid for WorldPride 2028 was the result of nearly two years of dedicated effort led by Michael Gladwin, Viola May, and the Cape Town Pride team. Their proposal was unveiled on October 26, 2024, at the InterPride General Meeting and World Conference in Medellín, Colombia. Backed by key endorsements from Cape Town’s Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Cape Town Tourism, and the Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, the bid demonstrated the city’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
Viola May emphasized the importance of local support, saying, “The support we have received from the city has been invaluable, and we look forward to their continued involvement in making this event a success.” The establishment of the Queer Initiative for Africa, a nonprofit organization, will oversee the planning and execution of WorldPride 2028, ensuring transparency and representation from diverse stakeholders across Africa.
Why Cape Town?
South Africa has long been recognized as the most LGBTQ+-welcoming country on the African continent. As the first African nation to legalize same-sex marriage and include LGBTQ+ rights in its constitution, South Africa has set a progressive example for others to follow. Cape Town, often referred to as the “Rainbow City,” embodies this inclusive spirit with its vibrant queer culture, iconic Pride events, and welcoming atmosphere for LGBTQ+ travelers.
Hosting WorldPride 2028 in Cape Town is an opportunity to showcase the city’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and advocacy for equality. From the stunning Table Mountain to the historic Robben Island and the lively queer nightlife, Cape Town promises to deliver an unforgettable WorldPride experience that celebrates love, diversity, and community.
