Okay, listen up, my little bookworms. You know I love a high-stakes, emotionally charged fantasy, especially when the main characters are women who know how to wield a blade, or a curse, and definitely know how to break your heart in the best way possible.
And darling, Of Flesh and Fable? Emily M. Syn’s debut is not just good, it’s a revelation. I devoured this book. I mean, I stayed up late, ignored my texts, and basically became one with the book until I hit that final, delicious word.
If you’re looking for a dark, sweeping, and utterly refreshing fantasy with a sapphic romance that burns brighter than any Fae lantern, stop what you’re doing and add this to your immediate TBR. Now. Go on. I’ll wait.

The Setup: Blood Debts and Bound Hands
The premise alone had me hooked. We’re thrown into a world where Elowen Lockwood, a mortal huntress, has a looming, non-negotiable expiration date. A Shade Lord is waiting to collect the blood debt hanging over her head on her twenty-first birthday, planning to literally siphon her life force to extend his own vile existence.
Hard pass, says Elowen, and honestly, good for her! She flees the mortal settlement, armed with little more than a dagger and a fierce desire to live, making a desperate run for the perilous Fae Realm of Aetherya.
Then we met Leijla. Oh, Leijla. She’s the other half of this gorgeous, terrible dance. Leijla is bound by a soul-crushing curse to the Fae Queen, a bond that forces her to commit truly unspeakable acts. Her latest assignment? Hunt down and capture our fugitive Elowen.

Leijla has a choice, albeit a terrifying one. She can fulfill her dark duty and deliver Elowen to a gruesome end, or she can chase a whisper of freedom, risking her life and the slim chance of ever returning to her homeland. You know which path my emotionally masochistic heart wanted her to choose.
Final Verdict: Unforgettable and Necessary
Emily M. Syn’s immersive debut swept me off my feet. It truly is darkly poetic and emotionally raw. It felt like a fever dream, part ancient myth, part terrifying nightmare, and wholly unforgettable. It’s the kind of high fantasy that doesn’t shy away from the darkness, but illuminates it with the fierce, protective love between its protagonists.
We get Fae politics, fell beasts, a grand prophecy, and a deeply mysterious past for Leijla that holds the key to the entire dark plot to enslave humanity. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Now, for the agonizing wait! I simply cannot wait to see what happens in the sequel, Of Venom & Virtue (2026). My nerves are already frayed, and I need my girls, Elowen and Leijla, to make it out okay! If you crave a fun, refreshing fantasy with a powerful emotional core and a necessary sapphic romance, please, please read Of Flesh and Fable. It’s a spectacular start to what promises to be an epic series.
