Bushwick just got a little brighter—and a lot queerer. Hive Mind Books, a new LGBTQ+ bookstore and coffee shop, opened its doors in mid-October on Irving Street, bringing a vibrant and inclusive space to the heart of the neighborhood. From the moment you step inside, the energy is unmistakable: After spending some time in Hive Mind I’d describe it as a place that boldly celebrates radical queerness in such a warm way.
This isn’t just a bookstore—it’s a reflection of the community it serves. Alongside queer literature, you’ll find works by Black trans authors, and pro-Palestinian literature, including works by queer Arab authors. These thoughtful selections amplify marginalized voices and make it clear that Hive Mind is a space where everyone is welcome, celebrated, and represented.
At its core, Hive Mind radiates a unique blend of radical activism and joyous, welcoming warmth. Whether you’re there for the books, the coffee, or the company, it’s a place that feels like a beautiful space for building community.
A Bookstore with Heart and Purpose
Hive Mind describes itself as a “queer and trans bookstore and coffee shop,” but that barely scratches the surface of what this space offers. At its core, Hive Mind is a celebration of queer and trans stories. From the moment you walk in, it’s clear: this is a place where LGBTQ+ voices are amplified, celebrated, and made easily accessible.
Unlike other bookstores where finding queer books can feel like a treasure hunt, Hive Mind puts them right where they belong—front and center. The whole front of the shop is dedicated to queer stories. I was thrilled to see a wide range of authors, including Black, trans, and queer Arab writers. It’s an intersectional paradise that doesn’t just reflect diversity but actively champions it.
Toward the back, you’ll find general-interest titles across genres, with a focus on used and discounted books. The curation is thoughtful, making it easy to stumble upon something new and exciting no matter where you look.
A Space for Community
Hive Mind isn’t just about books; it’s about community. The store has a cozy coffee counter, Wi-Fi tables, and plenty of seating, it’s a great space to meet with friends, do a little work or of course, read a book. The energy is fun and buzzy, and the bright, welcoming space feels like a breath of fresh air.
The design of the space adds to the vibe: large front windows flood the space with natural light, and the cheerful white-tiled floors are dotted with colorful flowers. It’s a stark contrast to the dimly lit, moody bookstore aesthetic (which I also love), but Hive Mind’s brightness feels like a metaphor for the kind of space it aims to be—open, welcoming, and full of life.
Events that Bring Us Together
What truly sets Hive Mind apart are its events, which are as thoughtful and inclusive as the space itself. During my visit, I learned about their queer writing nights, where LGBTQ+ writers can work on their projects in a quiet, supportive environment. There’s no pressure to share your work—just time to focus and create.
Another standout event is their tarot readings with Patricia, whose practice draws on a blend of astrology, theology, and East Asian spirituality. The emphasis on community and self-reflection makes these events feel deeply meaningful.
Hive Mind also donates a portion of its sales to organizations working for social justice, human rights, and environmental care. It’s a space rooted in values, making it not just a bookstore but a force for positive change.
Keep an eye on their Instagram events page, they are constantly adding new events to the calendar.
A Welcomed Addition to Bushwick
As I left Hive Mind, my partner and I couldn’t stop talking about who we’d bring back to visit. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to share it with everyone you know—a queer space that isn’t focused on alcohol, where the vibe is warm, inclusive, and unabashedly joyful.
For Bushwick, Hive Mind is more than a bookstore. It’s a community hub, a space where neighbors meet, stories are discovered, and connections are made.
Hive Mind Bookstore is a reminder of the power of queer spaces—and why we need more of them. I’m already excited to go back
