Kerala’s Backwaters are a paradise for those looking to unwind and soak in natural beauty. The best resorts in Kerala Backwaters are perfect for experiencing peace and tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Imagine watching golden sunsets on Alleppey beaches or exploring the labyrinth of canals surrounded by lush jungles and vibrant birdlife. This South Indian idyll is best visited from December to February, though the monsoon season enhances the greenery even more. Bird enthusiasts will be delighted by the sight of Indian darters, egrets, herons, and the iconic kingfisher.
Located on the southwestern coast of India, Kerala is a wonderland that captivates visitors with its natural beauty, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality. It’s no wonder that Kerala was the only Indian state featured on The New York Times’ list of 52 Places to Go in 2023. Resorts in Kerala Backwaters offer a unique blend of nature, luxury, and traditional architecture, with popular destinations like Kumarakom, Alleppey, Kollam, and Kozhikode.
Kerala’s backwaters are a network of serene lakes, rivers, and lagoons where you can find houseboats gently bobbing on the water. Vembanad Lake is the largest, but the backwaters extend to Kumarakom, Kuttanad, and Periyar, each offering a unique landscape.
This brackish network, parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, includes five large lakes connected by canals and fed by 38 rivers. The freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the Arabian Sea, creating a unique ecosystem that supports diverse aquatic life, from crabs and frogs to water birds and otters. The lush greenery of palm trees, pandanus shrubs, and various plants adds to the beauty.
Kerala backwaters, with their interconnected lakes, ponds, and rivers, are a key attraction in “God’s Own Country.” A tour on a traditional Kerala-style houseboat, or Kettuvallam, offers breathtaking views of sunsets, dense paddy fields, and moonlit waters. This serene and scenic experience is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Coconut Lagoon, A CGH Earth Experience
Our team absolutely fell in love with Coconut Lagoon, one of our favorite Kerala backwaters resorts. As queer travelers, we were welcomed with kindness and respect, making our stay even more special.
Getting to Coconut Lagoon is an adventure in itself—a 10-minute boat ride from the Kavanattinkara boat landing in Kumarakom brings you to the private jetty. Here, you’re immediately embraced by the thriving natural beauty of Lake Vembanad. The resort offers three types of accommodations: the luxurious Lakefront Villa with a Private Pool, the charming Heritage Mansion, and the cozy Heritage Bungalow. Each room features traditional furniture and artifacts crafted by skilled artisans, creating a genuine Keralan atmosphere.
The property boasts a pool, an Ayurveda center, a yoga hall, and a butterfly garden. However, the real highlights are centered around the lake. Sunset cruises and private dining experiences by the lake are unforgettable, and birdwatchers will be thrilled by the variety of avian species frequenting the area.
Coconut Lagoon seamlessly blends coconut groves and backwater canals with beautifully preserved wooden Keralan homes. The arrival and departure by boat are truly magical, setting the tone for a serene and enchanting stay. The peaceful grounds and delicious breakfast spread, featuring both local dishes and Western favorites, add to the overall experience.
With prices available upon request, Coconut Lagoon offers a unique and memorable escape in the heart of Kerala’s backwaters.
The LaLit Resort & Spa, Bekal
Flanked by the serene Nombili River, The LaLiT Resort & Spa Bekal is a luxurious 39-key property that promises a rejuvenating escape. This stunning resort features an expansive spa, sports and recreational facilities for kids, a Jacuzzi, and a yoga shala with breathtaking river views. Within the property, a natural lagoon adds to the tranquility, and guests can choose between rooms with picturesque lagoon views or stunning backwater vistas.
The most opulent accommodation option is the LaLiT Legacy Suite, offering views of both the lagoon and the backwaters. This suite boasts a private lawn, spa room, and a private pool, ensuring an unparalleled stay.
While the resort itself is a haven of peace, its location is perfect for exploring nearby attractions. The historic Bekal Fort is just a 15-minute drive away, and religious sites like the Ananthapura Lake Temple, Madhur Temple, and the Malik Deenar Mosque are all within an hour’s drive.
While we didn’t have the chance to visit The LaLiT Bekal, our stays at The LaLiT in Mumbai were outstanding. It is renowned for being one of the most LGBTQ-friendly hotels we’ve encountered. The LaLiT Mumbai’s commitment to inclusivity is evident through its diverse queer staff and initiatives like The LaLiT Suri Hospitality School, which supports LGBTQ+ hospitality students and guests. Additionally, the hotel offers books on LGBTQ history in India in guest rooms and features gender-neutral bathrooms by the pool. This welcoming and inclusive atmosphere makes The LaLiT properties a top choice for LGBTQ travelers.
