Travel Entrepreneur Found Dead in Custody Amid Russian Crackdown on LGBTQ+ Community

Andrei Kotov, a Russian travel entrepreneur who faced imprisonment for organizing trips for gay men, was found dead in his cell earlier today. His lawyer confirmed the death to the independent Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta. Russian authorities claim Kotov died by suicide, despite Kotov saying in court that law enforcement officers beat him and administered electric shocks during the arrest, even though he didn’t resist.

Kotov’s arrest in late November stemmed from the Russian government’s designation of the “international LGBTQ+ movement” as “extremist.” This chilling classification equates individuals expressing their sexual orientation or gender identity with dangerous terrorist organizations like Al-Qaeda and ISIS. The arrest was part of a broader police crackdown targeting LGBTQ+ clubs and businesses.

Kotov was “suspected” of organizing a “men only” cruise on the Volga River and planning a trip for gay men to Egypt.

Since labeling the LGBTQ+ movement as “extremist,” Russia has intensified its persecution of the LGBTQ+ community. Raids on underground gay clubs are frequent, and other forms of expression have become increasingly dangerous. Two female influencers were recently forced to publicly apologize for sharing a kiss on social media.

This tragic event underscores the escalating dangers faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Russia. The Supreme Court’s ruling last year effectively outlawed any form of LGBTQ+ activism, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

Vladimir Putin’s regime, while waging war in Ukraine, has increasingly demonized the West and its values, including LGBTQ+ rights. This crackdown is not merely about suppressing dissent; it’s about erasing the very existence and dignity of LGBTQ+ people in Russia.

What can we do?

  • Raise awareness: Share this story and others about the plight of LGBTQ+ individuals in Russia.
  • Support international pressure: Contact your elected officials and demand that they condemn Russia’s actions and impose further sanctions.
  • Donate to organizations: Support organizations that provide aid and support to LGBTQ+ refugees fleeing persecution in Russia like Rainbow Railway.

The death of Andrei Kotov is a devastating reminder of the urgent need for global action to protect the human rights of LGBTQ+ people everywhere.
