8 Tips for the Best LGBT Miami Trip

Craving a getaway that’s equal parts sizzling and welcoming? Miami might surprise you. Forget the cheesy Spring Break stereotypes – this city throbs with a vibrant LGBTQ+ pulse, especially for the girls, gays, and theys. Think art walks that fuel the creative soul, dance floors where everyone’s welcome, and beautiful hotels to basque in the sunshine. It’s time to ditch the expectations and discover an LGBT Miami that’s colorful, inclusive, and ready to show you a damn good time.

Visit the Gay Beach

The beaches in Miami are some of the best in the United States. They’re beautiful and well-maintained. My favorite was the gay beach on 12th Street and Ocean Drive, marked with two large pride flags and a rainbow-painted crosswalk.

You’ll also find the rainbow-painted lifeguard tower depicted in the photo below, that’s how you’ll know you’re in the right place. Rent a beach chair and enjoy the water activities. When you get hungry or are craving a bit more excitement head over to The Palace for a high-octane drag brunch.

Anyone doing high kicks in full leather in scorching heat deserves at least a few of your ones. And for a dose of over-the-top luxury with a fascinating history, you can’t miss the Villa Casa Casuarina, aka Versace’s old mansion.

This place is pure extravagance – think a swimming pool paved with 24-karat gold tiles. It’s a bold statement piece, a testament to Versace’s design vision. Stop into their restaurant Gianni’s for a world-class dining experience.

Wynwood is full of beautiful murals, interesting eateries, and iconic events.

Explore the Vibrant Wynnwood District

No Miami trip for a lesbian explorer would be complete without hitting Wynwood. This former industrial district has morphed into a living, breathing art gallery, with walls exploding in color thanks to world-renowned street artists.

But Wynwood’s heart beats with a strong LGBTQ+ pulse. Ladywood parties on the third Thursday of every month at Electric Lady are legendary for their inclusive vibes and killer DJs spinning everything from Reggaeton to Pop to R&B.

Plus, Wynwood’s trendy cafes and art-centric shops are perfect for daytime hangs with your crew, where encountering a fellow traveler with a killer outfit and a welcoming smile is practically guaranteed.

Make sure to check out the murals done by Entes and Pesimo. Entes is our favorite street artist that we met in Peru.

Calle Ocho is the heart of Little Havana, Miami’s Cuban district.

Experience Miami’s Cuban Influence in Little Havana

Miami practically pulsates with Cuban energy. Little Havana is a must-visit – it’s like stepping into a vibrant snapshot of Cuban art, music, and, of course, food.

Hit it up on the last Friday of the month for Viernes Culturales, a block party that’s pure sensory overload in the best way possible. Cuban music fills the air, the streets come alive with art, and trust me, you’ll find some of the most delicious fried plantains (and maybe even the best mojito you’ll ever have) at Old Havana.

Grab a Bite in One of Miami’s LGBTQ+ Restaurants

Miami’s culinary scene is a vibrant tapestry, perfectly mirroring the city’s diverse LGBTQ+ life. Grab a table at R House in Wynwood, a local favorite buzzing with creative energy. This LGBTQ+-owned hotspot is renowned for its drag shows. R House blends art, food, and entertainment under one roof. Their Latin-infused menu boasts delicious options like Brazilian moqueca and their signature R burger, all perfect fuel for exploring the nearby street art scene.

Craving something a little more low-key? Head to Icebox Cafe in Sunset Harbour. This LGBTQ+-owned gem serves up modern comfort food with a global twist, with an amazing patio for people-watching and soaking up the Miami sun.

Try lesbian restauranteur Eileen Andrade’s Finka Table & Tap for a delicious exploration of Cuban, Korean, and Peruvian flavors. No matter your craving, Miami has an LGBTQ+-owned restaurant ready to tantalize your taste buds, all with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Miami’s Design District is packed with fun art installations and activations.

Wander Through Miami Architecture + Design

Miami’s not all about bumping bass and neon lights (though hey, there’s a place for that too!). The city has a surprising hidden gem – its architecture and design scene.

Ditch the glossy real estate brochures for a sec – exploring Miami’s Art Deco Historic District in South Beach feels like stepping into a pastel dream. With rows of buildings in soft pinks, baby blues, and mint greens, all decked out with those cool geometric flourishes that scream vintage Miami. It’s like wandering through a giant art deco postcard, with each building a charming testament to a bygone era.

Then there’s the Miami Design District. This area is a whole different kind of eye candy – a curated haven for luxury stores housed in sleek modern architecture, interspersed with cutting-edge art galleries. It’s a feast for the senses, where every corner promises a new design discovery, from established names to rising stars.

Relax in Miami’s Gorgeous Hotels

My Miami adventure included stays at two incredible hotels, each offering a distinct flavor of the city. Axel Beach Hotel provided a very queer retreat directly across from the gay beach.

Axel is an LGBTQ+ hotel brand with “Hetero Friendly” as their tagline. Based on the advertising for the property you’d think it was chock-full of muscled-up gay boys, but the reality was much more inclusive. We saw queer couples and groups of friends of all stripes.

The property has beautiful ocean views from private balconies, chic art deco flourishes throughout the lobby, and a sparkling pool perfect for an afternoon escape. The impeccable service ensured every detail was taken care of, making it a haven for relaxation and rejuvenation.

In contrast, The W Miami Brickell pulsated with urban energy. Located in the heart of Brickell, the city’s financial district, this sleek high-rise offered stunning panoramic views and immediate access to the area’s vibrant bars and restaurants.

The hotel itself buzzed with stylish energy, from the trendy lobby scene to the rooftop pool. Here, design reigned supreme, with every corner showcasing modern luxury. Whether seeking a chic escape or a place to be in the heart of the action, both hotels offered unforgettable experiences.
