Discovering Merida Restaurants: Fresh Finds & Old Favorites

As I’m gearing up for a few weeks back in Mérida a city I called home on and off for 4 years, I’ve already started checking out some new restaurants because, let’s be real, eating while traveling is hands down one of my favorite things to do.

It’s been a couple of years since I last spent a significant chunk of time here, but my go-to local expat—aka my mom—has been sending me the scoop on all the cool new spots and keeping a running list of the places she wants to take me. Can you tell food is a love language in our family? The Mérida restaurants scene is buzzing, and I can’t wait to try new things and visit some favorites, I’m looking at you Wayan’e and Micaela Mar & Leña.

La Plancha Park: A Hub of Fun and Food

Before we dive into the food, let’s start with the setting. The newly revamped La Plancha Park has quickly become a local favorite. It’s a kid-friendly, dog-friendly oasis with nightly free entertainment, water features for the little ones, and multiple playgrounds. The park even has a food court that makes it easy to grab a bite while your kids (or pups) run wild. Whether you’re a local, an expat or visitor, it’s the perfect spot to relax, grab some street food, or even work off a meal.

Inside there is a new food hall to checkout. Beacause it is so new the food stall options are constantly growing but now you can find everything from pizza to tacos and classic Yucatecan dishes. Esmerelda Taproom is one of the big evening draws right now. A great option for visitors looking to try a handful of things in one stop.

Salón Gallos: Yucatecan Delights with a Twist

Salón Gallos is the place to go for a fusion of Yucatecan flavors and a fun, social atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for cocktails, enjoying the restaurant’s selection of local dishes, or staying late for the DJ and wine bar, this place offers an all-around great experience. Indoor and outdoor seating, plus a small cinema, make it a unique spot to spend an evening.

GIN 47 Mixology & Kitchen: Rooftop Vibes

For those who enjoy a great cocktail with a view, GIN 47 Mixology & Kitchen is a top pick. Located on a rooftop, the views are just as impressive as the menu. From shrimp tacos to innovative cocktails, this spot is perfect for a casual night out. The friendly staff will make you feel at home, and the diverse menu ensures there’s something for everyone.

Cinnamon Lovers Unite at Cimmoni’s Bakery & Café

Mérida’s bakery scene is heating up, and Cimmoni’s Bakery and Café is a cozy addition. Known for its irresistible cinnamon buns (with Nutella, of course!), the café also offers a small but growing sandwich menu, making it a perfect stop for a casual breakfast or lunch. Their coffee is also worth a try, especially if you’re looking to linger with a book or catch up with friends in a laid-back atmosphere.

Taste Restaurant at Lou’s: Comfort Food Heaven

For expats missing a taste of home, Taste Restaurant at Lou’s is a must-visit. Recently, two beloved local spots merged, and they’re perfecting the kind of comfort food that many of us crave. Picture crispy fish and chips, tender Sunday Prime Rib, and a Reuben sandwich to die for. Combine that with a lively happy hour and the friendliest staff, and you’ve got a place that feels like a home away from home.

Kim’s House: A Korean Feast

Maybe not my first stop because I’m coming from NYC and only in Merida for a couple weeks nut when I was living there or traveling long term I was constantly craving international flavors. If you’re in the mood for something a little more international, Kim’s House is a fantastic choice for Korean food. Fairly new but already making waves, this spot offers everything from flavorful dumplings to hearty dishes that pair perfectly with their welcoming indoor-outdoor seating (and yes, it’s dog-friendly). Whether you’re a Korean food connoisseur or just curious, the warm service and authentic flavors will keep you coming back.

Anima: BBQ on Calle 47

Calle 47 is quickly becoming Mérida’s unofficial “restaurant alley,” and Anima stands out for its high-end barbecue. This is the place to go for perfectly cooked brisket, fall-off-the-bone ribs, and creative cocktails that elevate the whole experience. With both indoor and outdoor seating, it’s ideal for a chill evening out with friends or family.

Bacab Cervecería: Beer Flights & Good Times

If craft beer is more your speed, head over to Bacab Cervecería. With a great draft beer selection and the option to try a flight of different brews, this spot is ideal for beer lovers. The laid-back atmosphere, live entertainment, and excellent staff make it a great hangout whether you’re grabbing a bite or just sipping on some local brews.

Sandunga: A Taste of Oaxaca

Last but not least, Sandunga is a true delight for those craving traditional Oaxacan cuisine. The owner honors her roots with authentic moles, imported spices from Oaxaca, and a menu that feels both familiar and exciting. With excellent service and original cocktails, this is a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the depth of Mexican regional cuisine.
