Last month Meg did a post about Femme Summer Travel Style. Folks loved it, but she got a ton of requests to do the androgynous fashion equivalent. Constance from LezBackPack put together her version so I decided to add in the fun and put together my own essentials.
Tops
Short-Sleeved Patterned Button Ups
The short sleeves on this shirt make it dressy enough to go out without sweating to death. It’s a little nicer than a T-shirt but not so stuffy that you look out of place. Plus, there is nothing worse than looking at travel photos and realizing your outfit sucked. This one is from Urban Outfitters but you can find them pretty much everywhere these days.
Denim Shirt
Denim shirts are super versatile. Wear it open with a T-shirt underneath it during the day or iron it with some starch, throw on a bow tie and you’re dapper ready for some nightlife. Buy this one at Urban Outfitters.
Neutral Colored V-Neck T-shirts
This may seem like an obvious packing choice, but be careful not to forget the basics. V-necks are always making my packing list because a minimalist look is always put together. I wear mine by themselves, underneath a button down or layered together. The on pictures is only $6 at H&M, grab a bunch of different colors to switch up your look.
Lightweight Sweater
I’m not sure why this is, but after I get a sunburned I always feel super cold at night. Keep the chills away without losing your cool factor in a light colored popover sweater. Wear it with a button down under it on the beach for bonus points. This one is from Zara and comes in four different colors.
Bottoms
Joggers
I hate my legs in shorts, I’m super tall and lanky so I feel self-conscious when I’m flashing my 6’ foot tall self in some short shorts. Enter Joggers. They’re comfy, lightweight and something different than your usual jeans and T’s routine. PLUS they show off your shoes. Let’s be real, every outfit is really about the shoes. Get them in a basic color or spice it up with a wild pattern. These ones can be found at H&M.
Accessories
Black Hat
Hats are a super easy way to change the vibe of a whole outfit. They are great for saving photos on horrible hair days. On a practical side, they’re great in extreme weather. They’ll keep both the rain and the sun off your face without being annoying to hold on to all day.
Scarf
Scarves are a must-have travel item because you can use it for so many things. I used mine to cover my legs at a Thai Temple, as a pillow on flights, a towel at the beach and a blanket on a cold train. Plus I throw it on with any of my Ts for a new look without having to take tons of bags.
Long Necklace
I got the airplane map necklace for Meg a few years back and it has recently become a favorite of mine. I had it custom made from a vendor on Etsy, they are great from finding really unique or custom pieces for a reasonable price.
Swimwear
A simple solid colored bikini top is the route I prefer to go with some fun swim shorts on the bottom. The shorter swim shorts are my favorite because I can pair them with a T-shirt before or after swimming without feeling sloppy. They’re more androgynous and less straight up BOY.
Nike Roshe Run
I have the unfortunate combination of being a shoe lover, ex-athlete and having severe hip problems. These shoes have been a lifesaver for me. They are super light to pack, come in tons of colors and enough support to keep me pain-free while I’m walking all over the place.
Vans
Vans are another shoe that come in a ton of colors. It is a great shoe to have because you can wear them with shorts during the day or with nice pants in the evening. They don’t have as much support as the Roche Runs, but they’re comfortable and simple.
Did I forget anything? What would you add to the list of MUST-HAVES for Androgynous Fashion?
